Summit XPS is an effective thermal insulator that helps prevent heat transfer through conduction and convection. Its insulating capabilities increase with various board thicknesses, leading to more regulated indoor temperatures. This article will assist installers in the process of installing Summit Nail-Up Ceiling Insulation. Nail-up ceiling insulation is typically used in residential buildings, schools, office developments and retail and commercial developments.
10 Step-by-step guide to installing Summit Nail-up ceiling insulation
- Fit brandering: Install timber or steel brandering at a maximum of 700mm apart, across the trusses and around the room’s perimeter. For truss spacing over 750mm or in areas exposed to wind, reduce the spacing between the brandering.
- Fix initial panel: Secure the first panel to the perimeter support using screws and washers at 300mm intervals, hidden by the cornices.
- Trim insulation boards: Ensure Summit XPS insulation boards are long enough to span the surface area of your project. Trim Summit XPS on-site, leaving a 5mm gap from each wall.
- Apply adhesive: Apply 5mm drops of adhesive along the brandering, spaced 200mm apart. You’ll need approximately one litre of adhesive per 30m².
- Fit concealed clip: Break the top of the groove at each board edge and brandering intersection. Insert a concealed clip into the groove, then screw or pop-rivet the clip to the brandering, pressing upwards to ensure adhesive contact. You’ll need approximately three clips per m².
- Install insulation boards: Fit subsequent Summit XPS boards using the tongue-and-groove joints to prevent movement.
- Trim final board: Trim the final insulation board and fit it into place.
- Fit cornice: Attach your chosen Summit XPS cornice. Summit cornices will finish off the perimeter of any room and neaten boards between trusses.
- Prepare the surface: Lightly sand the grooves, then fill any indentations with plaster key and crack filler paste. Wipe off excess paste.
- Paint: Finish with two coats of high-quality water-based matt PVA paint. The first coat should be acrylic filler to cover minor imperfections. The use of any solvents will damage the Summit XPS board.
Proper handling and maintenance of Summit XPS
To ensure the best performance and longevity of your Summit products, store Summit XPS in its original packaging, protected from direct sunlight and weather. Handle the board with care to avoid damaging the edges. If the board is exposed to direct or reflected sunlight, it must be painted to shield it from UV rays, which can accelerate ageing. If you choose not to paint, wipe the board with a cloth soaked in softened water before installation to remove any static charges from the surface.
